Before the opening of the Department of Infectious Diseases, the postgraduate education of doctors took place at the Infectious Diseases Course, which was established in 1963. Claudia Tişenco, PhD, Associate Professor, was the head of the course until 1978. Between 1978 and 1991, Vasile Negrescu, PhD, Associate Professor, Doctor Emeritus of the Republic of Moldova, held this position.

In July 1991, on the basis of the Course, the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Faculty of Continuing Education in Medicine and Pharmacy was founded, and Sava Ţâbuleac, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, university professor, was appointed Head of Department, a position held by him until 1998.

From October 1998 to 2012, the position was held by Victor Pântea, Associate Professor, later university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences.

Throughout the years, the following specialists have also contributed to the department’s activity: Rodica Gîlcă, PhD in medical sciences, Associate Professor; Vera Jitari, PhD in medical sciences, Associate Professor; Alexandru Andriuţă, PhD in medical sciences, Associate Professor; Stela Semeniuc, PhD in medical sciences, Associate Professor; Valentina Calinos, PhD in medical sciences, assistant professor, Lidia Serbuşco, PhD in medical sciences, assistant professor, Eugenia Gabaret, assistant professor, Ion Chiriac, assistant professor; since 2002 - Valentin Cebotarescu, PhD in medical sciences, Associate Professor; since 2007 - Lilia Cojuhari, PhD in medical sciences, Associate Professor.

Department of Children’s Infectious Diseases was founded as well on the basis of a course - the Course of Infectious Diseases in Children - and started its activity in 1967. Professor Valentina Halitov, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, an outstanding person of Moldovan medicine, was its founder and leader. From 1991 to 2010, Associate Professor, PhD in medical sciences, Galina Rusu fronted the department. The first staff members of the department were: Axenia Galeţchi and Danil Litvinschi, then Galina Rusu (1969), Nina Coţaga (1970), Prascovia Popovici (1972), Stela Semeniuc (1973), Lidia Serbuşca (1986), Ludmila Serbenco (1986), Dmitrie Cristian (1984),  Ludmila Pereteaghina (1986), Iurie Climaşevschi (1991), Tatiana Alexeev (1998) – all of them are PhD in medical sciences, Nadejda Sencu - junior lecturer (1991); Ludmila Bîrca - junior lecturer (1992), Tatiana Juravliov - junior lecturer (1992), Tatiana Stirbu - junior lecturer (2012).

Since September 2012, the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Infectious Diseases in Children have been merged, and the head of the new subdivision has been elected Associate Professor, PhD in medical sciences, Gheorghe Placinta, who leads it so far.

At the beginning, T. Ciorba Republican Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases was the clinical base of the department, and later, in 1974 - Children's Municipal Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases from Chişinău as well. Thus, together with the employees of the hospital, the Department forms a republican specialized methodological-training centre. Since September 2012, the department has been headed by Associate Professor Gheorghe Plăcintă.
